If you’ve been hearing people at the gym talk about HYROX but aren’t quite sure what it is, don’t worry—you’re not the only one. HYROX is one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world, and it’s changing the way people train, race, and challenge themselves. At Andare Fitness in Lakewood and Forked River, NJ, we’re proud to be one of the few local gyms offering HYROX-style training—and for good reason.
In this post, we’ll break down exactly what HYROX is, how it compares to other workouts like CrossFit, and why it’s such a great fit for our community.
So… What Exactly Is HYROX?
HYROX is a global fitness race that combines functional movement with endurance running. It’s often called a “hybrid competition” because it blends the high-intensity training you’d find in a CrossFit gym with the cardio demands of traditional endurance races.
Each race includes eight 1,000-meter runs, broken up by eight functional fitness stations. You alternate between a run and a station until you’ve completed all 16 parts. The event is always the same, whether you compete in New Jersey or in Europe.
The 8 HYROX stations are: Ski Erg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls. The challenge is consistent, intense, and meant to test both your endurance and strength. But it’s also scalable—so athletes of all levels can participate.

CrossFit helps build a strong base. HYROX gives you a structured goal to work toward—making them a powerful combo for building strength and endurance.
HYROX at Andare Fitness
We brought HYROX to Andare Fitness because it aligns perfectly with how we train: with purpose, intensity, and community. Both of our locations offer programming designed to prepare you for the race—whether you’re looking to compete or just build up your fitness.
Focused Endurance Sessions
We dedicate time each week to longer efforts—running, rowing, biking, and ski erg work—to help you build the engine you’ll need to power through race day.
Strength & Technique Coaching
Our coaches guide you through movements like sled pushes, lunges, and wall balls with attention to form and efficiency. We train smart, not just hard.
Transitions & Pacing
One of the biggest challenges in HYROX is pacing. We’ll teach you how to manage fatigue, recover mid-workout, and stay consistent through every run and station.
Supportive Community
You don’t have to train alone. Our HYROX crew pushes, encourages, and celebrates one another—whether it’s your first race or your fifth.
